Course overview
This daylong workshop is for practitioners who
want to learn or update knowledge on the current,
fundamental concepts related to fetal monitoring
in labour. It is designed for:
1. Practitioners new to the provision of
intrapartum care
2. Practitioners with clinical experience who have
not attended a programme recently, and
3. Experienced practitioners and those responsible
for teaching others who want a complete review of
the subject area.
Objectives
- Discuss the evidence and current guidelines
related to intrapartum fetal monitoring.
- Identify the basic principles of
maternal/fetal circulation, including the effects
of uterine contraction patterns.
- Identify physiological controls on and of the
fetal heart rate.
- Describe and discuss issues related to fetal
hypoxia including: fetal acid-base balance, fetal
blood sampling and fetal heart rate patterns
associated with fetal hypoxia.
- Demonstrate skill in interpretating fetal
blood gas results
- Discuss the benefits and limitations of
methods of monitoring the fetus during labour
(intermittent auscultation and electronic fetal
monitoring).
- Describe the technique of intermittent
auscultation and electronic fetal monitoring
including interpretation and management.
- Identify the definitions, characteristics,
aetiology, physiology/pathophysiology and
classification of all aspects related to
interpretation of the cardiotocograph tracing.
- Describe appropriate clinical management for
prevention of and/or correction of abnormal fetal
heart rate patterns.
- Use appropriate terminology in the
contemporaneous documentation of findings from
fetal heart rate assessment by intermittent
auscultation or electronic fetal monitoring.
- Share examples of possible referral procedures
within institutions to avoid conflict and/or
conflict resolution.
- Discuss the legal issues related to
intrapartum assessment of fetal well-being.

sharp and finish at approx 16.30.
